Capitalist Democracy in Good Times and Bad

The Fruitful Convergences of The Great Transformation; “The Turn to Authoritarianism in Latin America and the Search for its Economic Determinants”; and “Representative versus Responsible Government”

The lecture elaborates on Karl Polanyi’s, Albert O. Hirschman’s, and Peter Mair’s triadic notions on the role of the political sphere in capitalist development, including the obstacles it encounters. Making an attempt to integrate these insights, I shall point to building blocks for a possible comparative framework to analyze the diverse ways in which the capitalist democratic order might weather its hard times, or rather backslide into political crisis and authoritarianism.
