Background / Myanmar held local and national elections on 8 November 2015. The results, most notably the landslide victory of the National League of Democracy (NLD), were immediately accepted by the government authorities, contrary to what had happened in 1990, when the junta had refused to acknowledge defeat. The event is nothing short of historical: The last time multi-party parliamentary elections were held in the country for the whole assembly was 1960. Several challenges none the less now await Myanmar’s leaders-in-waiting. The panellists will provide some context to the parliamentary elections, familiarise the audience with the main contenders and the issues that dominated the electoral campaign, before discussing results and the effects of the November elections for government formation and the presidential election to be held in the Spring of 2015.
